Experience
I first got into teaching after I fell in love with Spanish literature. It's the passion I have for that art that led to my career as a teacher. I have my bachelor's in Spanish from the University of Buffalo as well as my master's in Caribbean studies, a humanities concentration. The majority of my teaching has been done in college classrooms. I've taught at various levels at several universities. From these numerous teaching experiences, I have come to understand that the most critical and important aspect of being a great teacher is understanding my students. This is why I'm always striving to listen to their interests and needs. Doing so enables me to understand and engage with them at a more personal level. I find that this relationship allows me to present the subject matter in a way that's most advantageous for their individual learning styles. Prior knowledge of my students' interests also allows me to introduce some cultural aspects within the lessons that they can appreciate. I think adding these cultural elements helps me sustain students' motivation and engagement, especially when they're dealing with the frustrations of learning a new language. As someone who's a native Spanish speaker, I know first hand how frustrating it can be to study a foreign language.
